If you’re wondering why aspiring filmmakers chose WOA as part of their interview project… well we wondered too, and it was a pleasant discovery.
When you‘ve been working for so many years in a certain field, especially when it comes to art and creativity, it’s still takes a lot to be amazed, to be astonished to the point of wondering “who knows how it was done”… We’re all acquainted with the sensors, the broadcasting techniques, the programmes. We forget that there are just few of us who can say “oh well, it simply were synchronized lights with Timecode”, and that instead our work is still mystery and wonder for many people. You don’t need impossibly sophisticated tools to do this, if the idea behind it has value.
Perhaps this is why the aspiring directors of the Luchino Visconti School of Cinema chose us to come and ask this simple question: “How are you able to amaze people through your work?”
Here’s what emerged from this chat.
TECHNOLOGICAL ARTISANS
We love to think ourselves as such, because these are our two souls.
WOA was born out of the need to have a place where experimentation was part of the creative process, and in the end we became a lab where digital technology and craftsmanship converge and blend. Over the years we’ve welded, melted resin, printed in 3D, carved, shaped…
In practice, we are a small workshop, which creates tailor-made work by carefully choosing our materials according to the specific needs of the client.
SIZE IS EVERYTHING
For us it’s the contained size of our team that is our strength. We’re nine individuals, moved by passion and curiosity, and our horizontal and flexible structure allows us to operate with the fluidity of a lab in place of the rigidity of a big company.
This translates into decisions taken autonomously without waiting for go-ahead “from the top”, in a free flow of creativity without the fear of making mistakes, and with the ability to adapt quickly to change.
PART TECH ENTHUSIASTS, PART MAGICIANS
Yes, we’re passionate about technology. Over recent years we’ve tried them all here in the workshop: artificial intelligence, virtual reality, metaverse, NFT, generative graphics… We like to play and test, but when we work we know that magic happens when everything is so easy for people that they forget how it’s done.
Technology in our projects becomes invisible: it’s just our language to convey a message or an emotion. And in the end we make sure that technology amplifies, not obscures, our creative vision.
Well, these were the highlights of the interview. If you want to see the result of this lovely chat (and take a peek at our workshop), here is the final video.

As always, we would love to know what you think of our approach to this profession, and also to hear about your own our working methods.
